Yesterday I wrote about the first iPhone/iPod Touch app that I bought – Zentropy Pointer. On the back of that I was looking through the other apps that I have installed and use on a regular basis and thought I’d put them up here. I’ve found that the novelty of a lot of the apps (especially the games) wear off real soon. The Audi A4 app was fun for about 5 minutes, Tap Tap makes you look like a bit of an idiot and Labyrinth LE was too easy.
There are really just
Instapaper is probably my most used app on the iPod Touch. Register at instapaper.com and then add the Read Later bookmark to your bookmarks toolbar. Then, when on a page that you want to read later, simply bookmark it to instapaper.com. The site pulls the HTML and a plain text version for you to go read when you have time. Saves squaloring up my bookmarks and lets me close down a load of tabs that I used to keep open. What makes it for me is that when you sync with the iPhone app, the text versions are copied to your iPod so that you can read them without needing a connection. Perfect for on the plane.
AirSharing is another app that I use almost every day. I’m not sure if this app was ever available for free or if I paid the $6.99 for it, but the app is installed and works brilliantly. When you fire up the app you can connect to your iPod via the Finder or a web browser. Drag and drop files directly onto the iPod and you can then view them using the AirSharing app. I’ve viewed 20MB PDF files without too many problems – they take a bit of time to open, but once open you can browse through them with little to no lag. PDF, Powerpoint, Word docs.
I use Newsgator online for pulling all my RSS feeds together and NetNewsWire on my desktop, so it was a no-brainer when I saw that there was an iPod NetNewsWire app. A single sync pulls all your unread feeds to a local cache and you’re in business.
I love using Evernote to try maintain some control over bits of papers and endless text documents on my desktop, but unfortunately the iPhone app leaves a bit to be desired. It requires you to be online to access your notes as there is no offline cache of notes. You can create a new note in offline mode and then sync it up when you are online again, but it would be great to have offline access to all my notes (like I do with the desktop app)
Remote app is more for cool factor than anything else. Connect to the iTunes Library on your desktop remotely over wireless from your iPod. Essentially a remote control, could be cool if you’re running the music for a party from your Mac. I use to to inflict horrific music on the office when I’m off in a meeting room somewhere else
I’ve looked for an app that syncs my Google Docs down to my iPhone (in an offline mode, just like I can to my desktop) but haven’t found anything yet. MiGhtyDocs seems to keep an offline cache, but only once you’ve accessed the document. Would be nice to have a download all option. Would it be too much to ask for basic offline editing?
WordPress app is one to keep watching – it was a bit dodgy when I first used it,but I like that you can write a post while offline and then post it when you get back to an internet connection.
So, what killer apps have I missed?

The suggested apps for my iphone sounds great but how do I obtain them and other apps of my choice? As far as I understand, I can’t buy apps because I’m in SA?
